Madrid Open 2026 : Potapova beat Pliskova and reaching Semifinal

In the Madrid Open Russian-born Austrian Potapova beat Karolina Pliskova by 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-3 victory and reach Semi-final clash.

The 25-year-old Anastasia Potapova made tennis heartbreak history by becoming ​the first lucky loser to reach a WTA 1000 semifinal ‌with her thrilling 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-3 victory ​over Karolina Pliskova. Pliskova clawed her way back to force a ‌tiebreak and level the match, but the third set has gone.

Potapova, who lost in qualifying last week has capitalized on her unexpected main draw entry and beat Pliskova in a roller-coaster clash despite squandering in three match points.

Potapova’s impressive victories added over former ‌French ⁠Open champion Jelena Ostapenko and world number ⁠two Elena Rybakina.

Potapova said,

“I wouldn’t for ‌any money and anything. That is what makes our sport beautiful. I was given a second chance and now I am being here. Really I am super happy and there is nothing better that ‌could happen to me in my life ​at the moment.”

“I was given a few match points in the second set on serve. But I ‌couldn’t manage my nerves at the time, I know that well”

“But it seems like this tournament keeps giving me second chances to play and I keep ⁠using them with big hope.”

Potapova will face Ukrain’s Marta Kostyuk in the ⁠semifinals, after Kostyuk beat Czech’s Linda Noskova by 7-6(1), 6-0. The 23-year-old Marta Kostyuk defeated Potapova in last year Madrid fourth ‌round and is undefeated on clay this year.
