Hazlewood will join remain in Sydney during the early part of the tournament, which start on February 7 to continue his return-to-play programme. Already Sean Abbott has joined the touring party as a travelling reserve.

Selector Tony Dodemaide said,

“Nathan, Tim and Glenn have arrived in Colombo and we look forward to meeting up with them when we arrive from Pakistan.”

“We felt with Josh it was more practical and beneficial for him to continue his rehabilitation at home, before travelling to Sri Lanka.”

Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the 2025–26 Ashes series after suffering a lingering Achilles injury sustained during his rehabilitation from a previous hamstring strain. National Selector George Bailey declined to provide a specific timeline for Hazlewood’s return. Australia’s preliminary fixtures in the tournament conclude on February 20 with Oman, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe named as group-stage opponents.

Meanwhile, Australia also suffered another setback last week as experienced fast bowler Pat Cummins. He was ruled out of the entire tournament due to a persistent back injury. Cummins has been replaced in the 15-member squad by Ben Dwarshuis.

“With Nathan Ellis also completing his return to play we decided to bring Sean with us as fast bowling cover should anything come up at short notice.”

Sean is a highly accomplished and versatile international player with experience across multiple World Cup campaigns. It was therefore logical for him to remain with the squad following the tour of Pakistan. The T20 World Cup will be staged across venues in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.
