Rory McIlroy made history at the 2026 Masters Tournament by winning his second consecutive Green Jacket at Augusta National on Sunday. The 36-year-old Northern Irish golf star fought through a tightly packed leaderboard to claim the 90th Masters title, He becoming only the fourth player in Masters history to win back-to-back championships. He joining the legends list with Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods.

Earlier in the week, McIlroy confidently stated that winning one Masters would make capturing a second easier, and now he proved it in dramatic fashion. After trailing by the three shots on the front nine he staged a brilliant comeback with a final-round with 71 (-1) to finish at 12-under 276.

This amazing victory also marked McIlroy’s sixth career major championship, tying Nick Faldo’s record for the most majors won by a European golfer in the modern era. In this achievement makes McIlroy 12th on the all-time major winners list, further strengthening his legacy among golf’s greatest players.

“Really i can’t believe that I waited 17 years to get one green jacket and I get two in a row continuously. I think that all of my perseverance at this golf tournament over the years has really started to pay off now.”

McIlroy produced a champion’s comeback in the 2026 Masters Tournament final round, overcoming early struggles to successfully defend his Green Jacket at Augusta National. After starting Sunday tied for the 54-hole lead at 11-under par alongside Cameron Young, McIlroy faced immediate pressure as Young birdied on the second hole to move into the solo lead at 12-under.

McIlroy responded like a true player champion. A crucial birdie on the 7th hole moved into double digits under par and another par-5 8th brought him within one shot of the lead. From there, he turned up the pressure while his closest rivals stalled on Augusta’s demanding back nine.

The defining moment came at the Amen Corner, while McIlroy birdied both the 12th and 13th holes to go 2-under through the iconic stretch and open a two-shot advantage. His back-to-back birdies proved decisive as Scheffler’s late push highlighted by birdies on 15 and 16 and left him just one stroke short after a superb 4-under 68.

McIlroy said,

“It is nice to have that two-shot cushion instead of the one shot like which I ⁠had last year. I looked at the leader board after I made the bogey on six and I went back to 9 under at that point. If I can get to 14 under, now i think I have got a really good chance of winning this tournament.”

“I didn’t quite ⁠get there and I got to 13, but 13 was good enough standing on the 18th tee.”

“It was a very tough weekend for me. I did the bulk of my work on Thursday and Friday, ‌but just so happy to hang in there and get the job which i done.”
