Earl Cureton, who had been a community ambassador for the Detroit Pistons for the past 10 years, sadly passed away on Sunday morning in a surprising event, as mentioned in a statement from the Pistons.
Earl “The Twirl” Cureton, who earned two NBA championships during his 12 seasons in the league, has passed away at the age of 66.
After his time as a player, Cureton went on to coach in the NBA, the United States Basketball League, and the Continental Basketball Association.
Cureton scored an average of 5.4 points and grabbed 4.7 rebounds in 674 NBA games. He played for teams like Philly, Detroit, Chicago, the Los Angeles Clippers, Charlotte, Houston, and Toronto. Notably, he was on championship-winning squads with the 1982-83 76ers and the 93-94 Rockets.
Pistons owner Tom Gores said,
“As of i know Earl was one of the most generous, positive and caring people I knew. He was a loving father, he devoted his family and I was honoured to be his friend. He was a champion as a player and an important ambassador in our community. We are really get heartbroken over his loss.”
Former Pistons guard Isiah Thomas said,
“He was a tremendous teammate and tough competitor. Big champion and a great human being.”
