After winning the U-17 European Championship earlier this summer, Portugal capped off the year by capturing its maiden World Cup crown.

Benfica’s Anisio Cabral timed his run perfectly to stay onside and slot home the lone goal in the 32nd minute, finishing a precise cut-back from Duarte Cunha. The strike took his tournament tally to seven placing him just behind Austria’s Johannes Moser, who
claimed the Golden Boot.

After failing to qualify for the previous nine tournaments since 2003, Portugal defeated Belgium, Mexico, Switzerland and Brazil in the knockout rounds to book their place in the final.

Coached by Joao Santos, Portugal built on its U-17 European Championship triumph earlier this summer by its first-ever World Cup title.

Austria advanced to their first-ever final after producing standout knockout wins against England, Japan, and Italy.

Portugal’s Mateus Mide, who finished the tournament with four goals and two assists, received the Golden Ball for the competition’s best player.

This was the 20th edition of the tournament, which FIFA has expanded and now holds annually rather than biennially. Qatar hosted this year’s event and will stage the next four editions as well.

Earlier in Doha, Italy claimed third place after goalkeeper Alessandro Longoni saved two penalties in a 4-2 shootout win over Brazil following a goalless draw.
