Rebecca Welch to become Premier League’s first female referee and Sam Allison also Appointed

Rebecca Welch is set to make history as the first female referee to officiate a Premier League match, overseeing Fulham’s home game against Burnley On December 23. Also, Sam Allison will be the official referee for Sheffield United vs Luton Town on December 26.

Having paved the way for female referees, Rebecca Welch made history last month as the first woman to serve as the fourth official in a Premier League match between Fulham and Manchester United.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) said,
We confirmed the appointment of Rebecca Welch on Thursday and also Sam Allison should become the first Black official to take charge of a Premier match for 15 years.

PGMOL’s head of referee Howard Webb said,
“Both Rebecca Welch and Sam Allison deserved their chance. They both are the part of the PGMOL development group, which fast-tracks talented officials through the pathway.”

“We already have seen three officials from the group and take charge of their first Premier League matches and now we have extend as number four and five, it shows the value of that work.”

“Still we have not seen a female referee to take charge of a Premier League game before and it is significant. Sam Allison become the first Black official with a whistle in the Premier League since Uriah Rennie.”
