Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo announced on Tuesday that the 2026 FIFA World Cup would be his last as he winds down one of the all-time great careers.

Ronaldo will be 41 years old during next year’s edition, marking his sixth appearance in the prestigious quadrennial tournament.

The 40-year-old forward, who has scored over 950 goals across club and international football, also revealed that he plans to retire from the sport within the next one or two years.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is aiming to make his sixth World Cup appearance next year. Ronaldo came closest to claiming the coveted trophy in 2006, when Portugal fell to France in the semifinals.

Portugal has yet to officially qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, but the team can secure its place with a victory over Ireland on Thursday.

After leaving Manchester United in 2022, Ronaldo joined Al Nassr, inspiring a surge of top footballers to make moves to Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia which has been investing heavily in sports and entertainment as part of its economic diversification plan.
