Mohammed Shami, Indian fast bowler won’t be playing in the upcoming Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL) due to a left ankle injury. He is set to undergo surgery in the UK, as confirmed by a source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday.
The 33-year-old cricketer, who is currently not involved in the ongoing Test series against England, was last seen representing India in the ODI World Cup final against Australia back in November.

BCCI source said,
“Shami traveled to London in the last week of January to receive specialized ankle injections. Initially, the plan was for him to start light running after three weeks, but unfortunately, the injections did not provide the expected relief. Surgery is now the only remaining option, and he will soon be heading to the UK for the procedure.
Despite facing challenges with his landing and experiencing pain, Shami, a key contributor to India’s successful World Cup campaign with 24 wickets, played through the discomfort, showcasing resilience and determination without letting it impact his performance.
Recently Shami honoured with the Arjuna Award, he has had a prolific decade-long cricket career, securing 229 wickets in Test matches, 195 in ODIs, and 24 in T20Is.

It’s very doubtful that the fast bowler will be back in time for India’s Test matches at home against Bangladesh and New Zealand in October-November.
It would have been better if Shami had opted for surgery right away, a decision that should have been made by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The approach of two months of rest and injections hasn’t proven effective, and considering Shami’s importance, especially with the upcoming matches in Australia, preserving him is crucial for the Indian team.
