Naomi Osaka and Victoria Mboko withdraw from 2025 Cincinnati Open shortly after Canadian Open final

WTA Montreal tournament 2025 champion Victoria Mboko and Runner-up Naomi Osaka officially withdrew on Friday from the Cincinnati Open 2025 in decisions openly telegraphed after their Canada Open final.

Both are faced off in the 2025 Canadian Open final on Friday, with Mboko coming out on top in three sets.

The 18-year-old Canadian Mboko who thrilled Montreal with her maiden WTA title run,she withdrew due to a wrist injury sustained in the semi-finals. The four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka attributed her absence to a “schedule change”.

Cincinnati tournament officials said both players had been granted second-round byes in recognition of their strong performances at the previous event.

The withdrawals opened the door for four lucky losers from qualifying to enter the first round of the main draw at the final major event before the US Open begins on August 25.

After overcoming Osaka 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 to claim the Montreal title, Mboko revealed that swelling in her wrist had been severe enough on Thursday morning to require an MRI scan before she played the evening final.

Victoria Mboko said,

“I woke up this morning, and I actually had my wrist a little bit swollen from (Wednesday’s) fall.”

“We quickly went to the hospital for an MRI and an X-ray before I came to the courts to practice at that time.”

“We got the green light that nothing too serious was going on in the wrist.”

“I am not planning on playing Cincinnati Open at the moment. I just want to take care of my wrist a little bit right now. It is just very close and sudden for me to go there and play again in two days.”

“I think I am just going to sit out on that one and prepare for the upcoming major tournaments.”

Former World number one Osaka said,

“It is going to be very interesting to see, yeah what my next match is and how I am going to play that.”
