His father Samson Viswanath was a police constable who once played football at the Delhi Police level, which inspired Sanju Samson to pursue sports. His mother Ligy Viswanath supported Samson to make his dream of becoming a cricketer from an early age.

Sanju spent his childhood in Delhi, where he studied at Rosary Senior Secondary School. After that his family moved back to Kerala to help him focus more on cricket. He get strong support from his parents and he joined cricket academies and started playing competitive cricket at his young age.
