Djokovic intensified the pressure on Norrie, breaking for a 4-3 lead with a crisp forehand winner before sealing the hold in the next game with his ninth ace to extend his advantage.

The 38-year-old Serbian began experiencing back discomfort after taking a 5-4 lead and briefly left the court for treatment before returning to serve out the opening set.

Novak Djokovic called for more medical attention in the three games into the next set and his first-serve speed briefly dipped following that break in play.

However, Djokovic soon rediscovered his rhythm trading blows with Norrie, who clawed back from a two-point deficit early in the tiebreak to level the contest.

Cameron Norrie opened the third set with a brilliant drop shot to secure an early break, but Djokovic responded with three consecutive games of his own pausing mid-rally at one point to bark at a spectator in Arthur Ashe Stadium to keep quiet.

Djokovic tightened his grip on the match, closing out the third set with ease before shifting into top gear in the fourth to preserve his perfect record against Norrie and set up a clash with Jan-Lennard Struff.
