Australian pacer Mitchell Starc announced his retirement from T20 International

Australian pacer Mitchell Starc has announced his retirement from T20 international cricket to focus on prolonging his career in Tests and One-Day International Cricket.

Mitchell Starc and Test captain Pat Cummins both are part of Australia’s long-standing pace trio, were they absent from the T20 squad named on Tuesday for the three-match series in New Zealand beginning October 1.

The 35-year-old Mitchell Starc, who claimed 79 wickets in 65 T20 internationals for Australia. He said his main focus was Test cricket as he looks to prepare for a demanding international schedule over the next two years.

Pat Cummins has been sidelined since the Test series in the Caribbean last month, with lower back pain hampering his build-up for the Ashes against England starting in November. Starc aims to be keep full fitness for the Ashes test, next year India Test series and the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Mitchell Starc said,

“I have really loved every minute of every T20 game which I have played for Australia. Particularly the 2021 World Cup, not just because we won but the incredible group and the fun along the way.”

“Looking ahead of T20 retirement is my best way forward to remain fresh, fit and at my best for those campaigns. It also gives really helps to the bowling group time to prepare for the T20 World Cup in the matches leading into that tournament.”

Australia selection chairman George Bailey said,

“Mitchell should be incredibly proud of his T20 career for Australian team. He was an integral member of the 2021 World Cup winning side and, as we across all his cricket. He had a great skill for blowing games open with his wicket-taking ability.”

“We will acknowledge and let’s we celebrate his T20 career at the right time, but pleasingly he remains focused on continuing to play Test and ODI cricket format for a long as possible.”
