The 38-year-old Argentine legend sustained an upper right leg injury early in Inter Miami’s penalty shootout victory over Mexico’s Necaxa during their Leagues Cup match.
Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi will be out indefinitely due to a ‘minor muscle injury in his right leg’, according to a statement released by the Major League Soccer (MLS) club on Sunday.

Lionel Messi underwent medical tests to assess the extent of the muscle discomfort that forced him out of the match, Inter Miami confirmed in its statement.
The medical tests confirmed a minor muscle injury in Messi’s right leg. His return will depend on clinical progress and how he responds to treatment.

This means there is no more timetable to set for return of the Miami talisman, who currently shares the MLS season lead with 18 goals and has also recorded nine assists in 18 matches.
Jordi Alba, who scored the stoppage-time equalizer that pushed the match to a penalty shootout eventually won 5-4 by Miami, said Messi’s early exit was a major blow and a source of sadness for the entire team.
Inter Miami has won 12 of its 22 matches in this season and currently sits fifth in the Eastern Conference with 42 points, eight behind leaders Philadelphia, but with three games in hand.
Any extended absence would also be a significant setback for Miami in the Leagues Cup, Which Inter Won in 2023 shortly after Messi’s arrival in South Florida.
Miami, set to host UNAM Pumas on Wednesday, currently ranks second in its MLS group with five points in the Leagues Cup standings and would secure a quarterfinal spot with a win.
