Suryakumar Yadav confirms Shreyas Iyer is stable after a serious spleen injury in the India vs Australia ODI and under observation.

India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav confirms Shreyas Iyer is recovering after suffering a “life-threatening” injury, as reported by multiple media outlets.

Suryakumar Yadav says, Shreyas Iyer has been responding to his messages and is now in stable condition.

Iyer was rushed to a Sydney hospital after his vital signs fell to dangerous levels following a severe on-field fall. As he attempted to take a catch during the third ODI between India and Australia on Saturday. He was admitted to the ICU, where scans showed internal bleeding caused by a spleen laceration.

Shreyas has been moved out of the ICU and is now stable.

Suryakumar said,

“When we got to know about his injury, I called him and I realised that Shreyas doesn’t have his phone on him. I called our physio Kamlesh Jain, who told us that he is stable.”

“First day, I can’t say much about him, but he is looking good now. We have been in touch for two days and he has been replying. If he is able to reply on the phone, then he’s stable.”

However, Suryakumar added that Iyer will remain under close observation for the next few days.

“Doctors are there with him and it is looking good. Everything is normal now, but he will be kept under observation for a few more days. He is been talking to everyone and be causal. so it is good.”

“We are not the doctors, When we saw it from the outside it appeared he was normal after taking the catch.”

Suryakumar further revealed that the team initially thought Iyer’s injury was minor but realized its seriousness once he returned to the dressing room.

“Only those who were there can say how bad the suffer injury was. After going into the dressing room, they well realised he need more care. He was rushed to a specialist who revealed what has happened.”

Doctors and physios said,

“It was an unfortunate injury and this is quite rare. Shreyas Iyer is also a rare talent. Rare incidents happen with rare talent. But it is fine now, God has been with him and he is recovering well. BCCI is in full support, and we will take him home alongside.”
