Alexander Zverev is looking for his 25th tournament title and eighth in an ATP 1000 Masters tournament.

Top-seeded Alexander Zverev came from behind to beat No.18 Alexei Popyrin 6-7(8), 6-4, 6-3 on Monday and secure a spot in the Canadian Open 2025 semi-finals.

Zverev, the 2017 Canadian Open champion, will next face either 11th seed Karen Khachanov of Russia or 26th seed Alex Michelsen of the United States.

Zverev, the World No.3 from Germany has now reached his 75th career ATP Tour semifinal. He is targeting for his 25th career title and his eighth at the ATP Masters 1000 level.

The remaining quarterfinals are scheduled for Tuesday. The Second seed Taylor Fritz will face No.6 seed Andrey Rublev of Russia. While No.4 Ben Shelton is set to take on No.9 Alex de Minaur of Australia. Both semifinal matches will be played on Wednesday, leading into Thursday’s championship final.

Popyrin claimed the opening set with a delicate backhand volley that clipped the net and dropped in for the winner after a lengthy rally, drawing cheers from his fans including one waving an inflatable yellow kangaroo.

Alexander Zverev responded by immediately with his return with firing a ball completely out of Sobeys Stadium in frustration, but he quickly regrouped to go up 2-0 in the second set.

Popyrin earned a break of his own and held serve to level the second set at 4-4. Zverev, who won the Canadian Open in Montreal eight years ago by defeating his childhood idol Roger Federer, responded by holding for 5-4 and then breaking again to take the set and even the match.

The 28-year-old, who was runner-up to world No.1 Jannik Sinner at this year’s Australian Open and also reached the French Open quarterfinals. It has improved his career record against Popyrin to 4-0 including a recent third-round win at the Paris Olympics.

Zverev, who has won two clay-court titles this year and entered Toronto as the highest-ranked player in a draw missing several top names. It including World No.1 Jannik Sinner, No.2 Carlos Alcaraz, No.5 Jack Draper, No.6 Novak Djokovic and all of whom opted to skip the hard-court event.
