US Open 2023: World No.1 top seed player Carlos Alcaraz was leading 6-2, 3-2 while Dominik Koepfer retired and he having rolled his ankle at a grimace-inducing angle minutes into the first round match.

The 20-year-old Carlos Alcaraz entered into the second round of the 2023 US Open on Tuesday, his opponent German Dominik Koepfer, got injury and retired while during their primetime match in the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

During this match Koepfer took a medical timeout and his ankle taped and returned to the court with the same score. But it was not clearly with full strength and Carlos Alcaraz easily converted a well-placed drop shot.

After Alcaraz forced Koepfer into a forehand error, leading to a break-point opportunity in the seventh game, Koepfer concealed his face in his towel with disappointment.

For this Alcaraz said, “Obviously I have to give full credit to him. “For me step on the court, I felt great and the same energy that I felt last year.”

With the conclusion of the tournament, Alcaraz is set to surrender his world number one ranking. This outcome follows rival Novak Djokovic‘s dominant victory over Frenchman Alexandre Muller in the tournament’s initial match on Monday. As a result of this outcome, Djokovic is poised to reclaim the top position in the rankings.

The next match for Spanian Alcaraz with South African Lloyd Harris in the second round.

Alcaraz said,

“He’s a great player and he has big shots, so I have to be really focused on the match fully. “Obviously in this match is going to be a tough one for me.”
